Washington Island is located at the northern end of Wisconsin's Door County peninsula.  You can get here by private plane (we have our own airport) or boat (Detroit Harbor).

But most people come by car -- taking a half-hour ferry ride from Northpoint through Pilot Island and Detroit Island to Detroit Harbor.

Questions and Answers

One of the most frequently asked questions by tourists is, “Are there any people on the Island?”  This is usually followed by the statement, “There are no cars allowed on the Island, are there?”

The answers are, yes, there are townspeople living on the Island year `round.  The citizenry includes a fifth generation of Islanders. And, yes, vehicles are allowed on the Island. There is, in fact an Island taxi service as well as tour buses, bicycle and moped rentals.

There are churches, hotels, motels, restaurants, museums, a general store, a mercantile (hardware store), a 12-grade modern school, a baseball field--and an Island team, beaches, a Rec Center and many friendly folks who’d love to have you visit.

For the security-minded, there are law enforcement officers, a fire department, a rescue squad, a medical clinic and a doctor available on the Island.

The Island Stavkirke

The Stavkirke ("Church of Staves") is modeled on an original Scandinavian design, and was hand-built by "islanders".

Services are often held there throughout the year.

And many weddings are performed there as well.

Mann's Gifts is also built in the Scandanavian style.
Watch for the goats on the thatched roof!
