Washington Island's Newspaper

The Washington Island Observer has all the news that’s (probably) fit to print.  Our columns include, “Nature New From Little Lake,” a nature column written by Marilyn Gau who, with her husband, lives near the small lake on the Island.

“Adventures in the Archives” gives information from the Island’s archivist, Barb Ellefson. “Washington Island: Through the Years” is a remembered history of the Island, written by Islanders, Hannes Andersen.

We also cover all the activities on the Island and offer a list of what’s going on at any given time. We tell about the Island’s theatre group, the mini-symphony that comes to the Island in the summer, artists and their works, and various festivals held in town.

We have a photo fun page, a Kiddie Korner section, as well as an entertainment section with crossword, trivia, cartoon, and a review of old movies on video (yes, there’s a video rental shop on the Island.)

In the News

Watch for fun photos of the Island’s Icelandic horses in the pages of the Washington Island Observer. This island was known as the largest Icelandic settlement in the U.S.

The gentle Icelandic horses can be ridden on Island trails. Visit Fieldwood Farms and Stables to see and ride these fine animals.

We also cover winter activities:

Ice-fishing, the Women’s Club Winter Festival, and cross-country skiers among other items.  One of the most interesting of these is the Scandinavian Festival.

The Island, having been settled in great part by Norwegians, Danes, Swedes and so on, loves to “hawk” its ancestry in this fest.
